1930’s Suit’s

The traditional “suit” was introduced to women’s wear in the 30’s after the end of the boyish silhouettes of the 20’s. High-waist, flare legged pants paired with ultra feminine blouses was the go to look. It was also in this decade that designer Chanel introduced her practical suit.

1940’s Suit’s

The 40’s completely changed the face of women’s wear. The suit was transformed its silhouette with the help of the shoulder pad, originally used in men’s suit. Designer Elsa Schiaparelli is credited for creating this wide shoulder suit, which is often described as the “x” silhouette.

1950’s Suit’s

The 50’s saw the continuing of the hourglass shape with women’s suits. Pencil skirts and matching jackets in tweed and wool dominated this era.

1960’s Suits

The rise of the 60’s saw a familiar hourglass silhouette with pencil skirts and matching jackets. The main difference of the 60’s was less focus on a tailored shape and a new boxy silhouette was born. This era brought on a young designer’s feminine version of the tuxedo suit, simply referred as Le Smoking by Yves Saint Laurent. This androgynous style has been considered the ultimate power suit.

1970’s Suits

Women’s suits in the 70’s mimic the 30’s wide leg, masculine look.

1980’s Suit’s

The 80’s brought on a vibrant appeal to women’s suits with jeweled colors, gold buttons and less subtle fabrics.

1990’s Suit’s

The 90’s suits continued with the “power suit” of the 80’s yet changed in terms of length. Colors were more muted adding a more casual androgynous feel resembling the 1940’s.
